My friends M and J are expecting baby #2 late this fall, so I've got another baby quilt in the works. This will be the first quilt that I've worked on from start-to-finish and blogged about.I was going to start at the very beginning of my process, but I'll skip taking you through the entire free-word association game (M... J... baby... Washington State... winter... ski instructors...) and the bad sketch gallery that my husband had to help judge. For the rest of the world, we can start with the "official" planning sketch:

The fabrics will look something like this (although I'll be working on adding more fabrics and alternating the light/dark and fuzzy/shiny to catch the baby's attention):

M and J's first baby's quilt turned out like this:

Neat! I had no idea how a quilt would get started. Thanks for sharing this with us!
And you are so sweet to make things for your friends!
Thanks! I love playing with the fabrics -- this way I don't have a hobby that ends up with me getting smothered in a mountain of my own quilts :)
This has been my process for the last couple of quilts. Seems to work out for me -- gives me a good balance between making a plan and being flexible enough to adjust based on the fabrics in my stash.
I also love being able to include some of the fabrics from baby#1's quilt (and other quilts from M's friends' babies) in baby#2's quilt. It's a great symbol to me of these interconnected relationships.
Can't wait to see what comes next! (I admit, I'm not very good at the sketching and planning stage which is why I end up fumbling at later points unless I'm following a set pattern :o)
What a wonderful idea for a baby quilt, can't wait to see how it turns out.
