Tell Me Thursday - Quilting Texture for Mountains

I'm getting closer to having my mountain-themed baby quilt finished. All the piecing is done and now I'm working on the quilting. It's easy to decide on a pattern for the printed fabrics and corduroys, which is where I started.

My bigger challenge is going to be deciding on a quilting pattern for the solid fabrics. Still trying to decide about those. As an added challenge, some of the solid fabrics are either very thick (flannel or other "furry" fabric) or very satiny. I'm trying to decide if I can leave some of those plain and just outline the mountain shape.

Has anyone had experience leaving un-quilted spaces that are larger than a hand-span? Will polyester batting really go crazy in the open space after a few washings?

You should check to see how far your batting manufacturer suggests you can quilt it, but your can generally quilt farther apart with poly batting. Now for my opinion, don't leave an unquilted section, put something in the space. You don't have to do the same thing in every block but try to do the same amount so you don't have a saggy spot on your quilt. It is like having your bra with only one cup on one boob. One is where it's supposed to be and the other is flapping in the wind.

I think it's cool when quilts don't really have a pattern :)
